At a time when people’s pop culture interests change with the click of a mouse, Canadian rapper Mad Child is staying relevant the only way he knows how.

“Go hard or go home,” Mad Child, also known as Shane Bunting, said during a phone interview.

Mad Child was shooting a music video in Niagara Falls when The Daily News caught up with him earlier this week. Actually, he was shooting about 20 music videos before embarking on a 44-show Canadian tour in support of his debut solo album Dope Sick.

He plays Pogue Mahone on Dec. 27.

“It’s a lot of shows. Any way you slice it, it’s a lot of shows,” he said.

Mad Child’s strategy for longevity is two-fold. First, he’s thinking quantity, hence the volume of music videos and live shows he’s smack dab in the middle of.

By doing that, he’s guaranteeing his name and music will be in the public spotlight beyond the six-month shelf life of the “next big thing,” he said.

The second part of his plan is to create the kind of music and albums that stand the test of time, much like The Beastie Boys, Big Daddy K or Notorious B.I.G. — all artists Mad Child grew up listening to — have done.

“We listened to albums for years,” he said.

Too many musicians focus on quality or quantity, not both, said Mad Child. In a day and age where anyone can create music and post it to the Internet, musicians need to work hard to stay relevant. The days of putting out an album once every five years are over.

“You’ve got to find that balance,” said Mad Child.

His goal has worked so far. Mad Child exploded onto the hip-hop scene in the early 2000s with the now iconic Canadian rap group Swollen Members. The band is still active, and popular, today.

As a solo act, Mad Child recently performed to sell-out crowds across Canada during a previous tour and is ready to do so again.

He credits his new found energy to his new found sobriety. Mad Child has overcome an addiction to prescription painkillers and sees his life and his music in a new light, he said.

And he promises his Kamloops fans he’s going to put on a high-energy hip-hop show that won’t disappoint.
